The Cattleman's Pages of History

We are in the 103rd year of The Cattleman magazine. We thought we would take a few minutes each month to look back in history to find the interests of cattle raisers at the time. We have reprinted the text of these news items as they appeared in the issue. Any comments from the editor appear in brackets.

The Cattleman cover shows the Grand Champion Car Load Steers from 6666 Ranch. The caption reads, “A new record for the Southwest was made at Fort Worth during the past month when the Grand Champion carload of beef cattle of the National Feeders & Breeders Show, which averaged 1,425 pounds, sold at $18.00 per cwt… They were in the famous 6666 brand and bred and fed by Capt. S. B. Burnett…”

➤ The New Series ’17 Elgin Light Six, touted as “Another Good, Honest Motor Car,” was advertised by Worth-More Motor Sales Company in Fort Worth. The advertised price? $985 FOB factory!

➤ When Harry L. Youngerman returned from the 41st Annual Convention of the Cattle Raisers Association of Texas, a nurse met him at the door with twin baby boys, who had arrived during his absence.

➤ The convention also included a secret wedding. “We have just been advised of the marriage of John Montgomery, field inspector for the Cattle Raisers Association of Texas, and Miss Nellie Daly of Chicago, at Fort Worth, during the recent convention. As Montgomery preferred a quiet “honeymoon” and feared that employees and members of the Association might insist upon providing a little special entertainment, his closest friends were not advised of the event until the following week.”

The Cattleman cover was a photograph by Audie Rackley, taken on the Graham 77 Angus Ranch near Wichita Falls in October. Pictured were Ted Posey and his five-year-old son David, typical of the countless men and boys who enjoy the opportunity to ride horses as part of their work on ranches throughout the Southwest.

➤ The 1967 Convention was held in Houston. Noted as “one of the best in the history of the TSCRA,” it attracted more than 1,000 cattlemen and guests. In the president’s address, “Carpenter [Ben H.] called attention to progressive measures being taken by the TSCRA to better serve the Southwestern cattle industry and to the steps being taken to increase operational efficiency within the association.”

➤ Along with business reports and resolutions, The Cattleman included Mary Whatley Clarke’s human interest snippets about the attendees, many of whom are still faithfully attending meetings and conventions.

➤ The first case of screwworms in the United States that year was found Jan. 30 on a calf in Willacy County, Texas, the U.S. Department of Agriculture reported. USDA’s Agricultural Research Service and Texas Animal Health officials warned that additional cases could be expected. ❚
