The Cattleman's Pages of History

We are in the 103rd year of The Cattleman magazine. We thought we would take a few minutes each month to look back in history to find the interests of cattle raisers at the time. We have reprinted the text of these news items as they appeared in the issue. Any comments from the editor appear in brackets.

November 1916

The cutline for the Nov 1916 cover is, “MERAMAN–Grand Champion Aberdeen-Angus Bull at the Panhandle State Fair, Midland Stock Show, Texas State Fair, Louisiana State Fair, and defeated at the American Royal only by the Grand Champion by a very close decision. Age 13 months. Bred and raised by Sam H. Hill & Son, of Christoval, Texas. Sold to Otto Battles, of Moquoketa, Iowa, for $1,500.00. Will be used by the purchaser for breeding and show purposes.”

In that issue, we read this excerpt.
➤ To Enlarge Stock Show
“Plans for a great annual Southwestern Exposition at Fort Worth, to take the place of the National Feeders and Breeders Show, were discussed at a mass meeting of prominent citizens, held at the Chamber of Commerce, during the past month.

“Following the show in March, 1917, according to the terms of a contract made with the Fort Worth Stock Yards Company, ten years ago, stock subscription totaling approximately $50,000.00, made by citizens of Fort Worth and prominent cattlemen of Texas will be refunded, and plans for the future of the National Feeders and Breeders Show must be made. Many valuable suggestions were made by those participating in the discussion and the meeting promises to signalize the first step toward an exposition bigger and broader in scope than anything in the Southwest. The indefinite scheme for elaboration does not contemplate neglecting the live stock features, but to build around that nucleus a greater institution.

“A committee, of which Marion Sansom is chairman, was appointed to formulate definite plans and report to a later meeting.”

“The scenes on our cover this month are typical of the kind of operations which have made the Southwest the fastest growing cattle feeding area in the nation. Pictured at lower left are the facilities of the Veribest Cattle Feeders near San Angelo, Texas, which are operated by Gene Newman.”
